Although Leiden University has long been regarded as an institution where teaching and research were practiced in close harmony, the reality during much of its early existence was rather different. In this first Scaliger Lecture, delivered on the occasion of the founding of the Scaliger Institute in June 2000, the renowned historian Anthony Grafton discusses this tension between ideal and reality through an analysis of one of the university’s earliest histories, Johannes Meursius’ Athenae Batavae (Leiden, 1625).

Anthony Grafton is Dodge Professor of History and Director of Historical Studies at Princeton University.
